PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES

Pro bono coaching offers multiple benefits to coaches who volunteer their time, and to non-profit professionals receiving coaching. It provides an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the greater good, promote the value of the coaching profession, and allows ICF members to earn hours toward ICF certifications -- all while enabling local non-profit leaders to better serve our community.

ICF Metro DC Chapter Pro Bono Projects

Pro bono projects allow our members to partner with a disparate group of nonprofits each year, extending our coaching to organizations not yet familiar with coaching and/or financially unable to provide coaching for their leaders and/or staff. Annually, we select several coaching projects, which vary in size and scope and are located in the greater DC Metro area. Project launches occur throughout the year. Projects lasting five months provide 8-10 hours of pro bono coaching to each client. Project applications are reviewed by the Pro Bono Committee; selections are made based on the Committee’s criteria.

Current Cohorts

Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County: Together in August, 2021, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) and ICF Metro DC launched the AHCMC BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Emerging Leaders Coaching Cohort (BELCC).  When you volunteer, you will provide professional leadership coaching to enhance the careers of emerging BIPOC arts managers in and around Montgomery County, Maryland. We are seeking a diverse bench of coaches for this opportunity.

Community Reach of Montgomery County: Since 1967, Reach has been advocating for and supporting vulnerable citizens with basic health and human services toward the goal of restoring their self sufficiency. Their work includes helping seniors age in place, providing English language learning and citizenship education, a health clinic, and providing resources for those who've experienced homelessness.

Justice Connection: Justice Connection is a network of Department of Justice alumni mobilizing to support DOJ’s apolitical workforce — and the democratic norms that protect us all.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Critical Care Department: ICF Metro DC pro bono coaches are currently coaching physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) at Washington Hospital Center, the largest private (non-profit) hospital in Washington DC. Their clients are the intensivists and APPs who provide critical patient care in the multiple intensive care units at the hospital. Coaching provides not only professional development and an opportunity to grow their leadership, but also a way of dealing with the stress of high pressure jobs and achieving better work-life balance.

Solidarity Center: The Solidarity Center is an independent nonprofit that helps workers secure fair wages, safe conditions and a voice on the job and in society. The Solidarity Center stands with workers who are silenced, mistreated or denied their rights – because when workers have the power to improve their own lives, democracy is stronger, economies grow and society becomes more just for everyone.

The Women’s Center:  Established in 1974, its mission is to significantly improve the mental health and well-being of all members of its community through counseling, education, and support – regardless of ability to pay. Its vision is mental wellness so all can thrive. The Women’s Center has grown to include services to clients of all gender identities, families, young adults, and children. They now serve over 3,000 people annually at their two locations in Virginia and Washington, DC, and in partner locations. Functioning as a teaching institution for mental health professionals, it provides one of the region's largest, most prestigious, and most competitive training programs. As a nonprofit organization, The Women's Center relies on philanthropic support to offer subsidized and free care and support to people in need in the community. Mental health services are funded in part by Fairfax County. Our coaches began providing services in 2024 to an array of professionals, including therapists, case managers and administrators.

Recent Metro DC Chapter pro bono projects include partnerships with:

  • Joe's Movement Emporium
  • ICF Ukraine
  • Vital Voices Global Partnership
  • Friendship Place
  • Food for Others
  • Bread for the City
  • Teach for America
  • Humane Rescue Alliance

We are grateful for this opportunity to allow the benefits of our work as coaches to be felt broadly in our local community.
